Soccer – Celtic eyeing deal for former Man City midfielder Yaya Toure

According to reports in Greece, Scottish giants Celtic are keen on the signature of free agent Yaya Toure.

Prime Toure

Now 35, Toure was once regarded as the most-feared midfielder in the Premier League.

After being utilised mainly in a deep-lying ‘destroyer’ role in Barcelona’s midfield, a new, more advanced position was soon found for the Ivorian following his move to Manchester City in 2010.

This enabled Toure to make full use of his frightening combination of power, close control and eye for goal.

Man City’s 2013/14 Premier League title-winning campaign perfectly-encapsulated just how dominant Toure was at his free-flowing best, when the Ivorian powerhouse racked up 20 goals and 9 assists in the league alone.

Man City departure

However, the last couple of campaigns have seen age gradually catch up with Toure.

The African managed just 10 Premier League appearances last season, only 1 of which came as a start.

As such, Manchester City subsequently came to the decision not to renew the veteran’s contract at the Etihad, with Toure having become available as a free agent last summer as a result.

Olympiacos return

In the end, following heavy links with the likes of West Ham and Celtic, Toure eventually made the surprise move to Greece in September, returning to Olympiacos, where he had previously lined out during the 2005-2006 season.

However, to say that the Ivorian’s stint back at the Karaiskakis Stadium did not go according to plan would be putting it lightly.

Following just 5 appearances in the colours of the Erythrolefki, Toure’s contract was terminated by mutual consent last month.

Celtic bound?

As such, the African is now once again available as a free agent, with one club reportedly keen on handing Toure another chance to prolong his career coming in the form of Scottish champions Celtic.

As per a report from Greek outlet Gazzetta, Hoops’ boss Brendan Rodgers has been liaising with Toure’s brother, Kolo, who currently acts as a technical assistant at ParkHead, over the possibility of Yaya joining the club.

Rodgers is said to be keen on securing Toure’s signature for the second-half of the campaign.
