Soccer – Man City unwilling to pay £100m for Ruben Neves

Man City need a holding midfielder

Currently, Fernandinho is Man City’s best option to play in their holding midfield role.

The holding midfielder role in City’s line-up is of great importance and if a player cannot excel in it, the whole team suffers.

This was evident when Fernandinho missed two Premier League games recently.

The Brazilian had a slight injury that caused him to be sidelined for Man City’s games against Crystal Palace and Leicester.

Given City’s lack of depth for Fernandinho’s position, John Stones and Ilkay Gundogan were tasked with filling the role on those occasions.

However, neither player was as good as Fernandinho and it is no surprise City lost both of those games.

Guardiola all but rules out Neves switch

With Fernandinho now 33 years of age, it is clear City need to start looking at replacements for him.

Man City have been linked with a number of replacements recently including Frenkie De Jong from Ajax.

Another name floated around to replace Fernandinho is Wolves star, Ruben Neves.

However, Pep Guardiola has insisted City are not willing to pay the supposed £100m Neves would cost:

“I started reading ‘Ruben Neves, £100m’. That won’t happen. We won’t pay £100m for holding midfielder.

“We have 4, 5, 6 options in every position – depending on age, what we believe and price. Our wage bill is 8th, 9th or 10th in Europe.”

Man City will face Neves on Monday evening as City take on Wolves.
