Mateo Kovacic talks about Liverpool

Prior to Chelsea’s match against BATE Borisov in the Europa League on Thursday night, Mateo Kovacic has been speaking to the media.

Kovacic, a Croatian international, has discussed Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia in the Champions League.

For the Real Madrid loanee, Liverpool’s loss should act as a warning for Chelsea. He said:

I watched the game yesterday and Liverpool struggled a lot.

In Belgrade the atmosphere is tough. It’s difficult to play there, like it will be here.

These are games where you need to concentrate or you will lose.

We need to be prepared so that what happened to Liverpool doesn’t happen to us.

For the record, Chelsea are above Liverpool in the Premier League table on goal difference.

Alvaro Morata out, Eden Hazard in

After scoring a brace for Chelsea against Crystal Palace last Sunday, Alvaro Morata has been left in London for the BATE Borisov game.

Olivier Giroud is expected to return to the starting XI today.

Meanwhile, Eden Hazard, who has been nursing a back problem, has travelled with the Blues to Belarus.

Will Mateo Kovacic stay at Chelsea?

That issue has been analysed by Simon Johnson in the London Evening Standard on Thursday.

Kovacic joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in the summer on a season-long loan.

Crucially, Chelsea failed to secure an option to buy Kovacic at the end of that deal.

Yet, according to the Evening Standard, “it is believed that some avenue has been left for Chelsea to negotiate buying the midfielder outright next summer”.

So will Chelsea make a move?

Simon Johnson makes two interesting points in that regard.

Firstly he believes that Chelsea would need to pay upwards of 50 million pounds to secure the midfielder on a permanent deal.

Secondly, the journalist wrote “one suspects if (Chelsea) had to decide right now, the answer would be no.”
